PODOPHYLLUM PLEIANTHUM Mayapple
Stunning is the only word to describe a mature specimen of the giant Chinese mayapple, Podophyllum pleianthum. It has two-foot tall soft stems, indentations on each thirteen-inch wide leaf, and the perennial is a clumper, not a runner. This deer-resistant, tropical-looking podophyllum doesn’t go dormant until fall. In early May, the clusters of red apple-shaped flowers peek between the two lobed leaves. Podophyllum pleianthum prefers moist organic soils and morning sun with shade for the rest of the day. While nurseries sell these at $25 or more, they are a bargain at our price!
